After you've had time to rest and settle in, we’ll gather for a detailed briefing session about the Tiji Festival Trek, where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers. During this time, we’ll also assist with any last-minute gear checks, permit preparations, and answer any questions you may have.
After breakfast our journey begins with a 7-8 hours picturesque drive down the Kathmandu-Pokhara Highway. Hot lunch will be served on the way at a nice restaurant. Pokhara’s tranquil beauty has been the subject of inspiration for many travel writers. Its pristine air, spectacular backdrop of snowy peaks, blue lakes and surrounding greenery make it ‘the jewel in the Himalaya’, a place of remarkable natural disposition. With the magnificent Annapurna range forming the backdrop and the serenity of the cluster of nine lakes with three major ones - Phewa, Rupa and Begnas. Pokhara is a great destination for a weekend getaway as well as a long relaxing holiday.
We begin our adventure with a scenic mountain flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, soaring above the Kali Gandaki Gorge with stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Upon landing in Jomsom, we start our trek towards Kagbeni, a charming medieval village nestled at the gateway to Upper Mustang. As we follow the windswept trails along the Kali Gandaki River, the arid landscapes and ancient Tibetan culture begin to unfold, offering a taste of the mystique that awaits. This marks the first leg of our journey to the sacred and vibrant Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang.
From Kagbeni, we begin our trek towards Chele, officially entering the restricted region of Upper Mustang. As we ascend along the Kali Gandaki River, the landscape transforms into a dramatic mix of eroded cliffs, windswept canyons, and barren hills that echo the high-altitude desert beauty of the Tibetan plateau. Passing through ancient caves and small villages like Tangbe and Chhusang, we witness the unique culture and architecture that define Mustang. From there, we ascend to the Dajori La (3,735m) and Bhena La passes, offering stunning views of the surrounding valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. After crossing several ridges and passing teahouses along the way, we finally reach the peaceful village of Syangboche, nestled among barley fields and rocky cliffs, our next stop on the journey to the Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang.
From Syangboche, we trek onward to Ghami, traversing some of the most breathtaking and spiritually rich sections of Upper Mustang. The trail climbs steadily to the Yamda La pass (3,850m), where chortens and mani walls mark the high, windswept ridges. Along the way, we pass through traditional villages like Geling, with its ancient monastery and stone-built homes reflecting deep Tibetan influence. The path continues over the Nyi La pass (4,010m), offering sweeping views of Mustang’s stark, beautiful landscape. A final descent brings us to Ghami, one of the largest villages in Upper Mustang, known for its labyrinth of alleyways, whitewashed houses, and the longest mani wall in the region. Today, we trek from Ghami to Charang, a journey that takes us through one of the most scenic and culturally rich sections of the Upper Mustang. As we leave the whitewashed village of Ghami behind, the trail leads us across ancient mani walls and through dramatic landscapes of red cliffs and eroded canyons. We gradually descend and cross the Tangmar Chu River before climbing up to the wide, windswept plateau where Charang sits, framed by a maze-like cluster of traditional houses and the impressive red Dzong and monastery. This peaceful village, once the capital of Mustang, offers a deep sense of history and is a perfect place to rest and absorb the spiritual essence of the region.
Today, we trek to the walled city of Lo Manthang, the crown jewel of Upper Mustang and the highlight of the Tiji Trek. Leaving Charang behind, we follow a trail that offers stunning views of the arid trans-Himalayan terrain, with glimpses of the majestic Nilgiri and Annapurna ranges in the distance. The path gradually ascends through barren plateaus and crosses the Lo La pass (3,950m), where we’re rewarded with our first breathtaking view of Lo Manthang nestled in the valley below. As we descend, the ancient kingdom slowly unfolds before us a city of whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways, and centuries-old monasteries, all surrounded by high desert walls. Arriving in Lo Manthang feels like stepping back in time, and we settle in, ready to explore its rich culture and the upcoming Tiji Festival.
Today, we take a fascinating day trip from Lo Manthang to the ancient Jhong Cave in the nearby village of Chhoser. After breakfast, we ride or trek through the striking desert landscape, passing chortens, cliffs, and small settlements along the way. The highlight of the day is the exploration of Jhong Cave, a remarkable five-story cave complex carved into a cliffside, once used as a place of meditation, shelter, and even defense. As we climb through its narrow passages and hidden chambers, we get a sense of the region’s mysterious and spiritual past. Along the way, we also visit local monasteries and interact with the warm-hearted locals, deepening our connection to Mustang’s unique Tibetan-influenced culture. We return to Lo Manthang in the late afternoon, with plenty of time to relax and reflect on this unforgettable cultural experience.
Today, we spend the entire day immersed in the final and most dramatic day of the Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. This sacred celebration, rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, culminates in a powerful ritual symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. We join the local community and other travelers in the royal square, surrounded by ancient monasteries and the royal palace, where masked dancers in elaborate costumes perform the concluding Cham dances. The atmosphere is electric as the mythical demon is ritually destroyed, bringing blessings and renewal to the land. Colorful prayer flags flutter in the wind, horns and drums echo through the walled city, and the spiritual energy is palpable. As the sun sets over Lo Manthang, we reflect on the rare privilege of witnessing this deeply meaningful cultural tradition, a highlight of our journey through the mystical kingdom of Mustang.
Today, we begin our return journey as we trek from Lo Manthang to Dhakmar, following a different and less-traveled route that offers new perspectives on the stunning Upper Mustang landscape. The trail takes us over the Chogo La pass (4,230m), the highest point of the trek, offering sweeping views of the Mustang valley and surrounding peaks. From there, we descend through remote valleys, ancient caves, and seasonal grazing lands, eventually reaching the striking red cliffs of Dhakmar. Known for its dramatic crimson rock formations and mythic legends, Dhakmar is both visually stunning and culturally rich. We settle into this quiet, picturesque village, surrounded by natural beauty and ancient stories etched into the very landscape.
Today, we trek from Dhakmar to Ghiling, continuing our journey through the captivating landscapes of Upper Mustang. We begin with a gentle ascent past sacred caves and chortens, gradually making our way back onto the classic Upper Mustang trail. Along the way, we’re treated to panoramic views of the surrounding barren hills and snow-capped peaks in the distance. As we descend, the terrain becomes more arid and windswept, and we may experience the strong afternoon winds typical of the region. By early afternoon, we arrive in the village of Ghiling, nestled in a dry valley surrounded by fields of buckwheat and barley. We spend the evening exploring the village’s ancient monasteries and traditional homes, soaking in the peaceful rhythm of local life.
Today, we trek from Ghiling to Chuksang, descending further into the lower part of the Upper Mustang region. The trail takes us through familiar terrain, but from a new angle, offering fresh perspectives of the dramatic landscapes we've come to love wind-eroded cliffs, ancient caves, and scattered settlements. We pass through the villages of Samar and Chele, where we may stop for short breaks and to revisit the cultural charm of these communities. As we descend, the air grows warmer and the scenery shifts, with more vegetation and hints of the Kali Gandaki River valley reappearing. By late afternoon, we arrive in Chuksang, a village nestled at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Narshing rivers. Surrounded by apple orchards and red rock cliffs, Chuksang offers a comfortable and scenic stop as we near the end of our Mustang adventure.
Today, we complete our final trekking day as we journey from Chuksang to Jomsom. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River, gradually descending through the arid Mustang landscape with views of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges guiding our way. We pass through the picturesque village of Tangbe, with its whitewashed houses and apple orchards, and then continue toward Kagbeni, where Upper Mustang officially ends. After a brief rest in this charming medieval village, we follow the windy river valley toward Jomsom. The terrain is relatively gentle, but the afternoon winds can be strong, so we aim for an early start. By mid to late afternoon, we arrive in Jomsom, a bustling town and the gateway to the Mustang region where we celebrate the completion of this unforgettable Himalayan journey.
This morning, we take a scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, marking the end of our Upper Mustang trekking adventure. The short 20-minute flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, flanked by the majestic peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. As we descend into the lush green valley of Pokhara, the contrast in landscape is striking from the arid highlands of Mustang to the serene lakes and forests of this vibrant lakeside city. Upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest, with the rest of the day free to relax or explore the peaceful surroundings of Pokhara.
After concluding the unforgettable Tiji Festival Trek in the heart of Upper Mustang, we drive back from Pokhara to Kathmandu, offering our trekkers a final chance to relax and take in the scenic beauty of Nepal’s diverse landscapes.
