Tour story

The Tiji Festival Trek in Upper Mustang is a unique cultural and spiritual journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and mystical regions. Held annually in the walled city of Lo Manthang, the Tiji Festival short for Tenpa Chirim, meaning “Prayer for World Peace” is a deeply symbolic three-day Tibetan Buddhist celebration. It commemorates the triumph of good over evil, centered around the myth of a deity named Dorje Jono who defeats a demon responsible for chaos and drought. Set against the backdrop of dramatic Himalayan landscapes and centuries-old monasteries, the trek and festival offer a rare opportunity to witness a living piece of Tibetan culture, largely preserved due to Upper Mustang’s isolation.

The trek typically begins from Jomsom, after a short flight from Pokhara, and follows the ancient salt trade route through barren, wind-swept valleys, caves, and timeless Tibetan villages. Along the way, trekkers pass through traditional settlements like Kagbeni, Chele, and Ghami, encountering chortens, mani walls, and sky caves etched into cliffs. The arid terrain, reminiscent of the Tibetan Plateau, contrasts with lush river valleys, all set beneath towering peaks such as Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. The journey to Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of Mustang, builds anticipation for the festival’s spectacle, which draws locals in ceremonial dress and monks performing sacred masked dances.

The highlight of the trek is the Tiji Festival itself, usually held in May, where the walled city of Lo Manthang comes alive with ritual, music, and color. The performances take place in the courtyard of the royal palace, attracting both pilgrims and foreign visitors. Masked monks reenact the mythological battle of Dorje Jono, accompanied by chanting, horns, and traditional instruments. The festival serves not only as a spiritual cleansing for the region but also as a social gathering for Mustang's scattered communities. For trekkers, it’s a rare chance to engage with authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture, making the Tiji Festival Trek a once-in-a-lifetime blend of adventure, culture, and spirituality.
